Corporate Tax Filing in the Greater Toronto Area: A Complete Guide for Business Owners
January 9, 2026How to Calculate Your TFSA Contribution Room for 2026
Your Tax-Free Savings Account, commonly known as a TFSA, is one of the most powerful tools available for building tax-free wealth in Canada. However, contributing more than you are allowed can lead to costly penalties. As we approach the 2026 tax year, it is especially important to understand how your TFSA contribution room is calculated and where to find the most accurate information.
At Everoak CPA Professional Corporation, we help individuals and families make confident financial decisions by staying informed and compliant with CRA rules.
When Your TFSA Information Is Updated
Your TFSA activity from 2025 will be processed and reflected in your CRA My Account by April 2026. This makes early 2026 the ideal time to review your TFSA contribution room.
It is important to note that CRA TFSA data is only updated once per year. Because of this delay, your CRA account may not reflect recent contributions or withdrawals. To avoid accidental over-contributions, you should always verify your available room using your own financial records and statements from all financial institutions where you hold a TFSA.
2026 TFSA Dollar Limit
The TFSA contribution limit for 2026 is $7,000.
This annual limit is added to your available TFSA contribution room on January 1, 2026, regardless of whether you already have a TFSA or plan to open one later in the year.
How to Calculate Your TFSA Contribution Room
Before making any TFSA contribution, it is essential to calculate your available contribution room accurately.
Your TFSA contribution room represents the total amount you are allowed to contribute across all of your TFSAs combined. Having multiple TFSAs does not increase your total limit.
Your TFSA contribution room is calculated as follows:
- The TFSA dollar limit for the current year
- Plus any unused contribution room from previous years
- Plus any withdrawals made in the previous year
- Minus any contributions already made in the current year
The result is your available TFSA contribution room.
Qualifying transfers, exempt contributions, and specified distributions do not affect your contribution room.
Why Your Contribution Room Changes
Your available TFSA room changes throughout the year based on your activity.
When you make a contribution, your available room is reduced immediately by that amount, even though the change may not appear in your CRA account right away.
When you withdraw funds from your TFSA, you do not regain that room until January 1 of the following year. At that time, the withdrawn amount is added back to your contribution room along with the new annual dollar limit.
If you contribute more than your available room, the CRA may charge a tax on the excess amount until it is corrected.
Use Your Own Financial Records First
Your own financial records are the most reliable source for calculating your TFSA contribution room.
CRA My Account information is based on data reported by financial institutions and is updated annually in the spring. If you have more than one TFSA, your CRA account may be missing transactions or contain outdated information.
Always review statements from all TFSA issuers to ensure you are working with complete and accurate data.
Example: How TFSA Contribution Room Is Calculated
From 2014 through the end of 2023, John contributes the maximum TFSA limit each year, leaving no unused contribution room at the end of 2023.
At the beginning of 2024, John’s available TFSA contribution room is $7,000.
On June 15, 2024, John contributes $1,000. This immediately reduces the available room to $6,000.
Later in the year, on October 26, 2024, John withdraws $4,000. This withdrawal does not affect the remaining 2024 contribution room but will be added back in the following year.
At the start of 2025, John calculates his contribution room as follows:
- $6,000 unused room from 2024
- $4,000 withdrawn in 2024
- $7,000 2025 TFSA limit
This results in $17,000 of available TFSA contribution room at the beginning of 2025.
